Heather’s Healthy Holiday Tips

He had a broad face and a little round belly,
that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

While it’s acceptable for Santa to parade around with his big belly, most of us are trying to avoid growing our bellies during the holiday season.  Thought this would be a great time to share a few of my healthy holiday tips so you can keep your waistline in check.

1. Be realistic!  People, today is NOT the ideal date to begin your upcoming cleanse.  Why not wait until the holiday gatherings are all complete and the last of the Christmas cookies have been put to rest?!  Your motto for the next 10 days or so should be more along the lines of “maintain = don’t gain” as opposed to start losing.  Stay tuned for some thoughts on cleanses to start the New Year.

2. Schedule time to exercise.  One extra cookie (or two) is not going to cause you to gain weight.  However, why not be absolutely sure that scale is not going to creep up and hit the gym a few times before the end of the year.

3. Don’t skip meals.  With all the Christmas treats around home, the office, and school, make sure your belly is full of good stuff so you are not tempted to fill up on the bad stuff if you are hungry.

4. Eye up the ENTIRE buffet….and then make your food choices.  If you take a peek at everything that’s being offered, you can make an informed food choice. Go for your favorites or a mix of good and bad (instead of all bad).

5. Don’t stuff yourself.  You want to be able to keep that Christmas skirt/pants buttoned and that Christmas sweater from getting too snug while at the party.

6.Watch the cocktails! Not only do some alcoholic beverages contain a ton of calories, too much alcohol can lessen your inhibitions and induce overeating. Play it safe and don’t overindulge on the cocktails.

7. And if all else fails, bring your own healthy holiday dish to pass.  At least you will be guaranteed one healthy appetizer to fall back on.

Wishing all my readers a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.  May this season be filled with many blessings for all of you and may your bellies stay sleek and trim.
