The Fit & The Fat

On the eve of my very first triathlon, I’m feeling a little bit nervous.  Mentally, I keep telling myself I should not be nervous as I have done very decent training for my first event, but I just can’t help it.  My boys keep asking me if I’m going to win the race…someday they will appreciate thee idea of just “finishing the race.” Interestingly, there are only a handful of triathletes in the U.S.  Approximately 1.2 million Americans participated in some type of triathlon during 2009.  What?!?!  That’s all?!?!

Considering there are 307+ million people in the U.S., I think there is room for a few more triathletes.  And after tomorrow, I hope I can say that I am a new one added to the 1.2 million.

My taper week of tri training actually allowed me to time to read an interesting article on the state of health and wellness in WI. Our lovely state ranks 25th in the nation for our incidence of obesity.  This data comes from a report by the Trust for America’s Health & the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  The report says 24.7% of adults are obese in WI.  (Obese was defined as someone having a BMI > 30 which is very generous on the scale. Adults with BMI’s between 25 and 29.9 are considered to be overweight.) The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) estimates that our country spends about $147 BILLION each year on health care issues tied to obesity.  Ouch.  You can bet that each and every one of us is providing some type of “financial support” in managing the obesity epidemic.

It’s time to get off the couch people.  Who’s going to join me on my quest to complete a few more triathlons?  I’m going to continue my personal fight against obesity and hopefully, I’ll find a few more tri friends to join me along the way.
