A couple weeks back, I wrote about my “Going Green” favorite foods. St. Patty’s day brings another opportunity to go green. Tomorrow will be filled with shamrocks everywhere. Shamrocks, a type of clover, have different meanings to different people. St. Patrick provided us with the most well known meaning: he compared the shamrock’s three parts to the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Interestingly, the Shamrock is NOT the official symbol of Ireland. That honor is actually reserved for the harp.)
So, how do shamrocks tie into better health? Well, clover (especially red clover) contain many beneficial bioactive components including calcium, lecithin, chromium, magnesium, potassium, silicium, and vitamins A, E, C, B2 and B3. Clover is also considered one of the richest sources of isoflavon which is efficient in treating some forms of cancer. Clover may reduce the risk of lymphatic, ovarian, and breast cancers.
Clover is also a good expectorant; it soothes the spasm of the bronchi and aids in convulsive coughs. Clovers is also anti-asthmatic; decongests the salivary glands; may decrease arthritis pain; and relaxes the nervous system. In external use or topical applications, clover may be beneficial to treat acne, psoriasis, eczema and insect stings.
So, no need to feel green by drinking too much beer today! Celebrate by consuming clover!
